Dr. Nils Faltin: Project PROLEARN - work package Online Experiments
Online experiments are remotely controlled experiments or simulations of real experiments built for educational purposes. I lead the work package Online Experiments in the EU Network of Excellence PROLEARN. We work towards an integrated network of online experiments and do research on their educational value. At L3S I work in the project I-Labs. In an Internet assisted laboratory (remote lab), lab equipment is accessed and programmed through a browser from a remote computer. The operation of the equipment can be monitored with a user-controlled video camera. The remote laboratories are used in engineering education. For my doctoral thesis I have developed a method for the design of courseware for computer science algorithms. The thesis was published 2002. The method SALA emphasizes a Structured, Active and visual Learning of Algorithms.

  • From 1997 till 2000 I worked in the project MuSIK at the university of Oldenburg that developed hypermedia courseware with embedded visual simulations for computer science education.
  • From 1996 till 1997 I worked in a project at the university of Erlangen that developed a toolbox for parallel implementation of communication protocols. I extended the Message Sequence Chart language with real time requirements.
