Pervasive and embedded computing and communication is a paradigm that aims at providing trustworthy computing solutions and communication services all the time and everywhere. This entails the need for an interdisciplinary field of R&D that utilizes and integrates pervasive, wireless, embedded, wearable and/or mobile technologies. Intelligent software systems and technologies involving some sort of digital signal processing are present in many applications. Embedded and ubiquitous computing and communication systems are now invading every aspect of our daily life and are expected to profoundly change our life in the near future. The availability of small, low-cost, and low-power sensors, radios, and microcontrollers has triggered a huge wave of research in networked embedded sensing systems. The currently emerging cyber-physical systems community emphasizes the integration of actuation and control, leading to the need for secure, private, and reliable computing and communication services. Papers describing original work are invited in any of the areas listed below. Accepted papers, presented at the conference by one of the authors, will be published in the proceedings of PECCS. Acceptance will be based on quality, relevance and originality. There will be both oral and poster sessions. Special sessions, dedicated to case-studies and commercial presentations, as well as technical tutorials, dedicated to technical/scientific topics, are also envisaged: companies interested in presenting their products/methodologies or researchers interested in lecturing a tutorial are invited to contact the conference secretariat.

The European Union funded FLOSSCom research project is investigating Free / Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) communities as learning environments. The project aims to identify principles of FLOSS communities that could be transferred to educational settings, e.g. how the community model could help to improve education. The project will run a ‘Virtual and On-Campus Summer University’ starting at the 3rd of July. The Summer University is a 12 week open access session with the objective of developing a toolkit on ‘Learning the Open Source Way’ The summer university will be conducted as a joint event bringing in as a “special guest” the Ubuntu community – The world’s famous Linux distribution with a community of 320.000 enthusiasts! We especially encourage students to take the chance and engage with experts throughout the globe. With the shift towards the knowledge society, changing working conditions and the continuous evolution of information and communication technologies, peoples' knowledge and skills need continuous development. Technology-enhanced learning is one of the strategic objectives of the EU/IST Work Programme, with the goal of "improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of learning, for individuals and organizations, independent of time, place and pace." Innovative infrastructuctures, methods and approaches are needed to reach this goal, and will facilitate transfer and sharing of knowledge between individuals and in organisations. For e-learning, as in e-commerce and e-business, systemic changes wrought by emerging technologies are also changing the relationships between consumption and production - in this case of knowledge - as what many call 'Web 2.0' becomes more interactive and user-generated content becomes more widespread. The First European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning provides a unique forum for all research related to technology-enhanced learning, as well as its interactions with knowledge management, business processes and work environments. It will provide a competitive yet broad enough forum for technology enhanced learning research in Europe and world-wide through specialized workshops and the main conference.
