Research Interests:

Dr. rer. nat. Ralf Klamma has a diploma degree (1995) and a doctoral degree (2000) both in computer science from RWTH Aachen University for works on process centered requirements engineering environments resp. on repositories for organizational memory systems. He worked in several international and national research projects, mostly in an interdisciplinary and basic research setting in areas like multimedia metadata, social software, technology enhanced learning, requirements engineering, and knowledge management. Currently, Ralf Klamma leads the research group “metadata in community information systems” at the information systems chair, RWTH Aachen University. His research covers information systems theory, the application of information systems in engineering, cultural sciences, and virtual communities, social software, social network analysis, technology enhanced learning, geographic information systems, cultural heritage management, and new product development.

In 2001, he spent several months as a visiting fellow at the MIT Entrepreneurship Center of Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to experience Entrepreneurship Teaching and Research. Since 2002, he is project leader in the collaborative research center “Media and Cultural Communication” and since 2004 core member, work package leader for "Social Software" of the EU IST Network of Excellence on Professional Training PROLEARN, and member of the research cluster "Ultra High Speed Mobile Information and Communication" (UMIC). He has chaired the PROLEARN Summer Schools in Sile, Turkey (2005), Bled, Slovenia (2006), Fréjus, France (2007), and Ohrid, Macedonia (2008). He was assistant to the editors-in-chief of the journal “Information Systems”. In summer term 2004 he took over a stand-in professorship for media informatics at the TU Chemnitz, faculty of computer science and in winter term 2004/05 a stand-in professorship for dialog-oriented systems at the University of Passau, faculty of mathematics and computer science.

He is editor-in-chief of the Central European Information Server SunSITE CEUR, the PROLEARN Academy and the Multimedia Metadata Community.  He serves as associate editor for international journals like IJASS, IJTEL, and IJSHC. He has published in various research journals and conference proceedings. He is or has been reviewer for international journals like CACM, IEEE Multimedia, IEEE TKDE, IEEE Internet Computing, Information Systems or Information Systems Frontiers and conferences including ICIS, ECIS, CAiSE, CHI, EC-TEL, ACM GROUP, ACM Hypertext, CSCL and others. He is member of the German Informatics Society (GI-29676).
