Kickoff Meeting for EU TEMPUS project CUELC
The Kickoff meeting for the new EU TEMPUS project Cairo University E-Learning Center (CUELC) has taken place in Aachen on April 20-21, 2006 and in Evry on April 24, 2006.
At Cairo University "On-campus" and "Distance Education" are the main teaching methods. Both suffer from a number of distinct problems, including excessive use of lectures, lack of collaborative team work and the difficulty of to distribute learning material in distance learning. Computer based technologies can overcome the problems with the traditional teaching methods.
There are three main aspects for the project:
1. Building the E-Learning Centre infrastructure:
The E-Learning Centre will be equipped with the required hardware and software, as well as the site servers that will provide E-Learning material to the students. Available learning management systems and authoring tools will be evaluated in order to find out the most appropriate means to build the E-Learning centre. We will concentrate on open source courseware systems which fulfill the requirements of learning object standards such as LOM and SCORM. Thus we will be able to extend the Cairo Virtual Campus by using facilities provided by the RWTH Campus platform and the service supporting the creation and sharing of knowledge for Higher Education, currently used by INT.
2. Building a highly qualified team of E-Learning developers that includes the main groups: The ‘Content Developers’ team, who will be responsible for the analysis, design and organization of the course material. The ‘publishing and quality assurance team’, for publishing the textual, the graphical and animated material; then finally evaluate it. The ‘Customization Programmers and technical support’ team, responsible for adding new components, updating system according to state of the art and customizing SW/HW and maintenance and solving technical problems. Last but no least is the group of ‘Course Facilitators.
3. Visits between Cairo University consortium members and EU partners.
